Review of Brick (2006) by James K — 16 Feb 2012
I really admire this film for attempting to modernize the classic 30's, 40's and 50's detective stories, but I had a hard time following the story. As for the visuals, they were my favorite parts of the film.
I couldn't help but notice that Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character reminded me a lot of Spike from Cowboy Bebop, and, sure enough, I looked the movie up on Wikipedia afterward and read that CB was one of the director's influences.
Combining this with the visuals, my favorite scenes were in the tunnel where JGL walked with his head down and his hands in his pockets - they were images right out of CB. Also, the dialogue is great.
..so great that even a fantastic actor like JGL doesn't have to really try that hard to bring it to life. My biggest problem with the movie was that it was a very good idea that was very hard to implement.
