Review of Brick (2006) by Jaime V — 07 Jul 2012
Gimmick or not, Brick is an excellent neo-noir style film and marks a wildly inventive and excellent directorial debut from a talented director. Rian Johnson has taken the classic hard-boiled detective story and placed it in a contemporary setting of a high school, a genre mash up that shouldn't work but does brilliantly.
There are countless ways in which I love this film: Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance, the score, the unique dialogue, the editing, the lighting, etc. This is one of those rare films I could watch endlessly and never get tired of it.
The pieces may not lay out as clear as they could be by it's climax (the only reason I'm not giving it a perfect score) but the film is so admirable that you can easily forgive it. Bottom line is, Brick is an absolute excellent genre exercise from a superb director.
