I had heard some good things about this movie, and I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Now, after the first viewing, I was extremely confused. I had difficulty following the intricate plot, and as a result, I was bored watching it. However, me being the open-minded person that I am, figured that I had missed something. So I decided to give the movie another shot.

Now, after three viewings, I can say with sincerity that this movie is VERY good and VERY masterful. The intricate plot is beautiful, and only makes the movie more interesting to follow and LESS boring upon successive viewings. Re-watch value is never a bad thing. And let's talk about the main attraction: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This guy is one of my favorite actors. He is great in everything. Same holds true here. In fact, the way he looks here, as well as his performance, really made me at times forget it was him. I ceased to see him as JGL, and started seeing him as Brendan Frye. That is the shear sign of a good actor.

Now, about the plot: This movie takes place within this high school web of teenagers who are drug dealers. Upon hearing that, one might think, "What? That's ridiculous. High schoolers don't act like that." However, I view it as this: Most people can suspend disbelief that people with extraordinary powers can exist in the world of superhero movies, right? So, in the world of Brick, high schoolers do act like that. And in fact, being a high schooler myself, I regret to inform the ignorant that various high schoolers actually DO use drugs and pass them on to others. The thing that makes this film interesting is the noir spin on that situation. Yes, it's exaggerated, but come on, it's a movie, it's made for entertainment.

So, without a doubt, I recommend this movie to any hardcore film fan. If it baffles you at first, give it some time, then watch it again. It truly helps. Rian Johnson, I commend you. Can't wait to check out your other stuff. 5 out of 5.
