Review of Brewster McCloud (1971) by Jack F — 08 Aug 2010
Let me see if I've got this straight... Bud Cort is this virgin chauffeur who looks like (Where's) Waldo and lives by himself underneath the Houston Astrodome. He's building a pair of wings so he can fly his way to freedom. A young ladyfriend of his brings him organic food every day or so and masturbates in front of him as he exercises.
But Sally Kellerman doesn't want Brewster to have sex with this girl (or anyone) because he'll become too attached to the earth. Sally takes off all her clothes and gives Bud sponge baths.
Meanwhile, a cop arrives in Texas to help solve a series of murders where all the victims have been strangled and crapped on by birds. It seems to be making fun of "Dirty Harry", "Bullitt", Disneyland, and makes references to Captain America and "The Wizard of Oz". This is weird even for Altman.
I have no idea what any of this means, and the middle is kind of fat, but it's about as original as movies get, and oddly moving at the end.
