Review of Breaking the Waves (2014) by Paul P — 18 Feb 2008
You have to hand it to Lars Von Trier....
Yet again, he has made a truly captivating film populated by a fine cast. As always with Lars, the heroine at the centre of this tale is put through tremendous stress and distress and it's pretty heartbreaking to watch.
At it's heart, Emily Watson is jaw droppingly good. Watching her as she demeans herself in the belief that it will save her sick husband, it's incrediblly powerful stuff. The scene where she travels out to the ship for the 2nd time knowing what is likely to happen, it's really sad...
Out of all the grimness comes a happy ending of sorts that makes this a very rewarding watch. Great use of music too.
