Review of Breaking the Waves (2014) by Jonathan D — 05 Mar 2010
Coming from Von Trier, Id say is not a very easy movie to watch, its a mixture of pain, desperation, and understanding, one of that cathartic experiences that hunt you hours after the movie has ended. With this movie Von Trier proves to the world, he's one of the most visionary, revolutionary and gifted screenwriter-director out there, once you get to understand the movie you simply cannot take your eyes out of it even when your heart says otherwise. With a subtle and unconventional direction, the movie rise to another level of realism giving the screenplay just what it needs. Emily Watson's performance is an acting-miracle, she just plays the character with a visceral and magical way of acting that you can even feel sorry and justify Bess, the rest of the cast is powerful Skarsgard and especially Cartlidge who commands the screen with every look and every move.
Its just one of the film-gems of the 90.
