Review of Breaking Away (1979) by Scott T — 15 Nov 2008
My favorite movie. This is not flashy, had no stars in it, and little pure production value. It is, however, a wonderful script: a story of real families, of young men growing together and apart. This movie is warm and truthful without being maudlin, has funny moments like those that real people have, and tells tight stories.
I've seen this film more than a dozen times, and still get teary during two scenes: Dave and his mother with the passport; and Dave and his father touring the university campus. They are subtle scenes, full of things left unsaid, and they get me every time.
See this movie.
