Review of Breaking Away (1979) by Ben B — 07 Apr 2010
It's unabashed optimism and its brilliant capture of the innocence of youth is this film's main thrust and charm. Most moments are wonderful and comes across as effortless poetry; He's young, he loves cycling, he lives in Indiana, but aspires to be Italian.
It doesn't get any better than that. However the film falters when it gets lazy and gives in to conventional over the top melodrama.
