Review of Breaking Away (1979) by Todd S — 31 Aug 2005
The Outsiders captured the angst of rebellious teenagers better. Rocky presented the underdog going on to glory better. Grease showed young, naive love better. In many ways this movie has been done better since 1979 but at the time it rightly deserved the Oscar for Best Screenplay..
It tells the tale of a group of teenage outsiders who sleep their way through summer, resisting finding jobs to support themselves -trying to establish their identity in a world hostile to the poorer, under-educated folk. It just so happens they find it, for one brief moment, in the sport of cycling..
I found the film Disney-esque with some mild profanity thrown in for good measure. Dennis Quaid is, like, 17 years old here and needs to get on a serious fast-food diet, dang he's ripped!.
