All the main characters are very complex in this film about commitment - commitment to your relationship and commitment to your morals. Each character's past has been full of so much anguish and turmoil that you watch curiously how the events of the movie affect them.
However, the added complexity contributed to a story with a few too many holes and leaps of faith.
