Review of Breakin' (1984) by Vince K — 18 Jul 2009
I remember growing up in New Jersey in the early '80s, breakin' out big pieces of cardboard to breakdance on, and trading Garbage Pail Kids. The '80s ruled! What a magical time! I can't believe I've never seen this movie.
I guess I was too busy watching The Breakfast Club, Red Dawn, and The Lost Boys 50 times. This is the ultimate prequel to You Got Served! (Which I must see now) It was shocking to see a young Christopher McDonald (the villain from Happy Gilmore) in a small role in his mid 20s with great (I was going to say bad) '80s hair.
Also, Flixter says Jean Claude Van Damme was in this movie! WTF! I didn't even notice him. He couldn't have been the evil dance instructor could he? There was so few white people in this movie, so he must've been.
I will have to recover from tivo and find out. Also, Ice-T has a small part as the street dancer's club house band rapper. All in all, this is a pretty funny '80s movie, funny as in looking back on 20 years later and realizing your life looked like that.
