Review of Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) by Roy Alvin A — 21 Mar 2012

A charming but odd romantic comedy. Not what I expected. Audrey Hepburn was very cute. Holly is an interesting character - blissfully ignorant about life, and proud of it. She struggles with reality for most of the film, finally embracing it at the end, when she realizes there's more to be had outside of her faux socialite bubble. This movie made me think, which most rom-coms don't do too much these days. And Blake Edwards' scene construction is excellent. He uses the camera to tell the story, especially things that were considered a tad racy for 1961.

And I'm sorry, but Mickey Rooney was funny. You have to put yourself in the context of the times to really appreciate it. Things like this shouldn't be judged through today's more sophisticated culture lens. It's history. Understand it, learn from it, and move on.
