Review of Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) by George L — 20 Feb 2011
This is one of those classics that probably would have been better were it made today, when it could get away with being more openly transgressive - despite its virtues it is a significantly less effective film on account of all the clumsy censorship and the conventionally romantic, thoroughly out-of-place happy ending (not to mention the racial insensitivity - the less said of Mickey Rooney's embarrassing yellowface performance as Holly's Japanese neighbor Mr.
Yunioshi, the better). Still, it's hard to dispute the iconic appeal of Audrey Hepburn in a little black dress.
