Review of Braveheart (1995) by Odysseas A — 02 Jun 2014

For the fourth quarter my group and I did our IR project on the film Braveheart (1995). The movie started off very slow I even considered turning it off. The story follows a young boy named William. His father ends up dying at a young age in the line of battle.

William's uncle shows up days after to take William away from his home in Scotland. Eventually the years pass and William returns back to Scotland as a young man. He is greeted by his old friend as they begin a rock throwing competition like they used to do when they were kids.

Eventually he spots his old childhood love in the crowd. He approaches her and they begin to catch up. Then the classic love story begins. They sneak around her parents and sneak off in the night. They realize they loved each other and never stopped since William left Scotland.

William realizes he wants to marry this girl but her father will not give him permission unless he becomes a warrior and fights for Scotland. William has not intensions in fighting because he believes in peace since his father had been killed in battle.

He ends up marrying the girl secretly then they end up sharing their love for each other in the woods. The next day an English guard sees William and her kiss the guard wants to have sexual intercourse with Williams mate.

She ends up being snagged and almost raped. She ends up biting the guard's ear which lets her get away only for a short time. She ends up being caught by the English and then is killed on a stake by having her neck slit.

This enrages William making him want to kill he begins to start a rebellion with all the villagers. Then it becomes your classic story of man loses his love and then goes on a killing spree. I consider this literature due to the fact that it has such a good storyline.

I consider this to be literature also due to the face that it has symbolism just like the books we have read this year. I consider William the Christ figure. People in the town of Scotland look up to William as people looked up to Jesus.

William is a savior and would die for his people. He risks himself to give his people what they want. Jesus was crucified so people could sin but still go to heaven like they wanted. The town also followed William in any actions her took.

They say books are the only form of literature but this movie definitely has a spot in the literature section with its gripping story line and amazing symbolism. I would give this movie a 4 out of 5 stars.
