Review of Brave (2012) by Stefan N — 24 May 2013
"Brave" boasts interesting and powerful animation with a few chuckles and fantastic immersion to the Scottish Highlands. There is a scene with an arrow being driven through another arrow in slow-motion.
If that's not some of the year's best animation, I do not know what is. The jokes feel forced and are mostly slapstick done in a cliche way. Nevertheless, I still laughed a little throughout the film.
The place where this film is successful is the immersion of the audience into the Scottish Highlands. With the vibrant score, beautiful visuals, and Scottish voice actors, I feel as if I was flying around Merida's castle.
Where the movie falls short is probably the most important part, the story. The story is a bloated mess of cliches and overused story-arcs and plot lines. The characters are not extremely original, but all have a little bit of uniqueness.
The mother-daughter relationship is definitely strong and the story also has no real villain which adds a nice touch. The message is sweet and children might enjoy it. My real problem is that I think that children will find it boring at times as will adults.
"Brave" is not as impressive as other Pixar movies, but is solid entertainment to watch when you are bored.
