Review of Brave (2012) by Bradley J — 01 Jul 2013
As 'brave' (and successful) as many Pixar-philes who've been waiting for a proper challenge to the powerful Disney princess 'syndrome' were hoping Merida would turn out to be, this story sadly reins in the rollicking imagination of previous Pixar classics to tell a more intimate story, which wouldn't negatively impact if it weren't so one-dimensional.
Merida's struggle to understand her mother (and vice versa) never really reaches the level of maturity that we've come to expect from this grand-slam studio... alas, it doesn't matter much because the movie will read exactly how it's supposed to - an excellent movie for young girls and a great start for what I hope can turn into a bigger and more exciting 'princess' franchise.
4/5 More cuddly than EPIC, this movie will still fly high with the toddler through pre-teen set.
