Review of Brassed Off (1996) by Rod S — 18 Aug 2007
Another slice of English social comment. In the Yorkshire town of Grimley the pits are about to be closed by the Conservative Government of the time lead by Thatcher. All are under great pressure as the majority of the miners are on strike trying to save the pit from closure.
The one thing that keeps everyone together is the Brass Band - like many of the pits had - an institution in their own right. This is the story of the rise and rise of the Grimley Brass Band even though most of the members are undergoing stresses and strains in their lives due to monetary or relationship problems.
Great parts played by the younger Ewan McGregor who lays Andy who is bedazzled by Gloria (Tara Fitzgerald) and the marvellous Pete Postlethwaite who plays Danny - the band director for the past 11 years, if you like social drama and English movies then this is a must.
