Review of Brassed Off (1996) by Andy O — 09 Sep 2009
One of the best of British, Brassed off is a very moving and sometimes funny account about one of the most turbulent times in British history.
Centred around a small mining community in Yorkshire in 1992 it tells the story of a community being decimated from the outside by market forces that no one has control over and a bands attempt (akin one feels to the orchestra on the titanic to play on).
It contains many of the stereotypical story telling mechanisms, young love, heartache, changing of the guard.
It gives you a deep respect (whatever your politics) of what they went through and is one of the best British films I've seen , a masterpiece!
