Review of Brain Damage (1988) by Anthony B — 08 Sep 2013
Everyone seems to rave about Frankenhooker, not that there's anything wrong with that, because Frankenhooker is genius. However, for my money I would sooner watch Brain Damage, because while its not nearly as popular as Frankenhooker, it offers more gore, more goofs, and more good times.
Not to mention Elmer. An adorably diabolic little slug-like alien who has the intelligence and the capability to latch himself onto human brains and force its owner, in this case Brian, to help him feed.
..and on other humans no less. While the film is not even remotely billed as a comedy, unlike Frankenhooker, I am convinced that the humor, while slightly subtle, is never the less apparent throughout.
In fact, I would argue that it is ten times funnier than Frankenhooker, while still managing to be more disturbing than Basket Case. The squeam factor is awesome here. I won't spoil it for you, but I love the date scene with the spaghetti and meatballs.
What happens exactly? Well, let's just say you won't be going out for Italian anytime soon.
