Review of Boyz n the Hood (1991) by Brice B — 25 Jul 2009
8.8/10.
You know it's the 90's when Cuba Gooding Jr. is in great movies like this one instead of stuff like...uh, nevermind. Anyways, this film is possibly the only one that both offers you a real hint into what the Hood is like and has deep emotion in doing it. Gooding and Ice Cube are deep in their efforts to reveal the horrors of teenage gang violence to the silver screen. Lawrence Fishbourne also steals a few scenes as the devoted father trying to protect his son from all this. So many knockoffs have come from this film, and they all have that same message (increase the peace, as this movie put it), but very few have been able to capture that charisma and class that sets Boyz in The Hood a full head above the rest.
