Review of Boyz n the Hood (1991) by Andrew D — 28 Jan 2010
Important, personal, insightful, moral, raw, intelligent, and sometimes funny. Excellent direction (in the style of Scorsese), cinematography, and soundtrack. The fact that it's the 24-year-old writer/director's debut makes it more impressive, especially since he was nominated for Oscars in both categories.
Cuba Gooding Jr. is fantastic. Laurence Fishburne and Ice Cube are also very good. The kid actors aren't very good, though - an early scene in a classroom is particularly unrealistic. Also, the score is dated.
