Review of Boyz n the Hood (1991) by Dc F — 10 May 2010
The movie Boyz n the Hood was a realistic adaptation of what really happens in neighborhoods all across America such as the one in this movie. The film depicts what it is like for a young black male who is struggling to do the right thing with so much negative influence surrounding him all the time. To me there are three main characters in this movie and another who is just as important. Tre played by Cuban Gooding Jr., Ricky who is played Morris Chestnut, and Doughboy played by Ice Cube, and the last piece to the puzzle is Ricky's father who is played by Laurence Fishburne. They all are very different characters and all struggle with the same problems living in South Central LA.
The movie starts off with Tre moving in with his father, at his fathers house Tre has two main friends, Doughboy and Ricky. Ricky is a star athlete and Doughboy just got out of prison for being a gangbanger. All three teenagers have to deal with the crime that takes place in their neighborhood on a daily basis. They can not be soft in their neighborhood, so that have to keep the macho front on or else they will deemed as weak and can ultimately get killed for being weak.
The viewers get to see Tre at the peak of his adolescence as he goes through the typical stages that every teenager goes through. Tre is trying to be tough so that he can fit in, also he is trying to have sex with his girlfriend, but she has strong catholic beliefs. Tre goes through a real crisis when his friend Ricky is shot and killed by some gang members. He has to decide to take the high road and let life go on or does he take his fathers gun and go avenge his friend's death. He starts to go after the guys with doughboy but at the very end he changes his mind and gets out of the car.
The acting in the movie was great; it really made you feel what they went through and what they struggled with. All the characters were believable and played their parts with so much emotion and energy. John Singleton really hit a homerun with this movie, and opened my eyes to what black males have to deal with in some of the worst neighborhoods in America.
