Review of Boys Don't Cry (1999) by Eric M — 06 Dec 2011
This movie is anything but a light happy story. It is dysfunctional but it is also emotional and insightful. It is a movie about the hateful and intolerant nature people, and how ugly people can be when they do not understand something.
The movie does a good job of making the viewer commiserate with a girl who struggles with her sexual identity. Although she is emotionally damaged and confused you cannot help but feel her pain as she searches to find acceptance and love.
The ending is tragic and very hard to watch, and while I do not tend to enjoy movies this emotionally weighed down I respect this movie and found myself emotionally impacted. Hillary Swankâ(TM)s performance was excellent in a difficult role and she did a lot for the movie.
The message is clear and the story is well told, it is directed with empathy and is emotionally powerful.
