Review of Boyhood (2014) by Liz D — 23 Jun 2015
What an AMAZING film! Richard Linklater has really out done himself this time with this touching drama about the life of a young boy, growing from year to year. 12 years to be exact-which was how long it took to film the movie.
From year to year, we see young Mason (Ellar Coltrane) grow up with a single mom, an older sister and in Texas. This movie reminded me so much of my life (growing up with a single mom and in Texas) my only difference was that I was the older sister to my younger brother.
This is a realistic film about the relationships we have with our parents, the one's they have with us, those silly fights we have with our siblings that ultimately lead to unbreakable bonds, and to put is plainly, just getting through the years of being a "kid.
" From the suburbs of Houston and the city lights of Austin, this is Linklater's homage to not only Texas, but Texas life. He captured how I have felt and for all intensive purposes, this movie could have been called "Girlhood".
