Review of Boychoir (2015) by Stevan H — 28 Mar 2015
Troubled boy, Stet, grumpy choirmaster, Carvelle (Dustin Hoffman). We know why the boy is troubled (broken home) but not clear why choirmaster is grumpy (not enough talent to make 1st choice career as pianist?).
Lots of clichés about music, about working. The music is mostly not terribly good (and the high-D descant added for the Messiah is terrible. The whole thing has a "US has talent" or "Eurovision contest" flavor that doesn't sit so well with the occasional Motet.
Stet's vibrato and (obvious) pop note-bending also intrudes, especially when we are supposed to be admiring his having a one-in-a-million voice. But Kathy Bates does a good job as the CEO of the choir school.
