Shiftless people aren't ones you want to idolize. They have problems, but they don't want to face them by either blaming others for their problems, or retreating into a fantasy world where the problems don't exist.
We see examples of both in Boy, a charming story of Boy who has to deal with loving the man-child father he never knew. With the right mix of irreverence and heart that Waititi is now known for, the movie's simplicity works as a fun coming-of-age tale.
