Review of Boxcar Bertha (1972) by Wu C — 15 Sep 2007
Underrated early film from Martin Scorsese which is best described as a homage/love letter to 'Bonnie and Clyde'. Scorsese steals his favourite techniques from that earlier film but also adds more nouvelle vague to the melting pot as well as some directorial touches he would later make into his trademarks (although only in fleeting moments).
There is some very powerful imagery in the film, and all the 4 main characters are fleshed out well enough by a competent script. Should be considered as more than just an old Scorsese curiosity, Boxcar Bertha is in desperate need of a re-appraisal.
