Review of Boxcar Bertha (1972) by Marrick A — 06 Dec 2010
Martin Scorsese's first real feature (not counting his student film "Who's That Knocking at My Door?") is an ultra-cheap "Bonnie & Clyde" knock-off produced by Roger Corman that isn't nearly as sleazy and exploitative as it could have been due to the director's skillful and innovative direction, and Barbara Hershey's strong performance in the title role.
It's certainly not on par with his great works (and the film's climax is pretty over-the-top and silly), but his talent and sharp cinematic eye shine through, even if the material itself is pretty second-rate.
Worth seeing for die-hard Scorsese buffs at least.
