Review of Bottle Shock (2008) by Jonathan B — 07 Feb 2009
Unimpressive film that could not decide which direction it wanted to go in, and ended up going in too many. The comedy was OK, the father-son/coming of age drama part of the film was poorly done, their commentary on the plight of immigrant works was underdeveloped, and their attempts at being more pretentious than Sideways were very annoying.
I think the producers thought that by bashing the French they would appeal to the jingoistic nature of Americans and win most people over, which is usually not a bad idea but is not enough to make this film interesting.
I will give it two stars since Alan Rickman is always fun to watch, but they had way more Bill Pullman than necessary.
