Review of Bottle Shock (2008) by Mike B — 22 Sep 2012
A delightful and subtle film anchored by a superb performance by Rickman. The whole cast is strong, in fact. Beautiful, beautiful cinematography. A great story with multiple working arcs: will son live up to father's high expectations; who, if anyone, will get the girl; and can domestic wines, the young upstarts, stack up against the perennial French champions? Like the magic that happens in the wine making process, there is a hint of folksy, whimsical sorcery afoot here.
The movie has a stately pace, and viewer patience will be well rewarded. Repeated viewing reinforces my fondness for this film. It works. Watch it!
