Review of Bottle Rocket (1996) by Ryan V — 01 Feb 2014
Not too many directors have a fully formed artistic style right out of the gate, but Bottle Rocket proves that Wes Anderson is an exception. The script, which was authored by Anderson and supporting actor Owen Wilson, details a flawed heist perpetrated by three bumbling losers.
There is a lot of quirky action in the film's later scenes, but a lot of the middle is given to the qualms, insecurities, and idiosyncrasies of the players. Overall, Bottle Rocket is an affecting film that's driven by warm acting and dry humor.
It's also a mid-90's crime movie that doesn't feel like a Tarantino knock-off, so that's another plus.
