Review of Born on the Fourth of July (1989) by The Most Interesting T — 05 May 2014
Underrated. :/.
An unflinching, compelling story of Vietnam vet turned activist. Cruise anchors the elegiac film with simplicity and strength and showcases his talent through his heartfelt performance. His character truly breathes life. This film is a good companion piece to Oliver Stone's simplified morality Oscar-winner Platoon.
Cruise galvanises the film which deals with thought-provoking subject matter, which should be more powerful than it is considering the darkness and fullness of the emotions at its center.
"Though departing from the source material, Ron Kovic's stirring chronicle of his Vietnam experience, this film is a good companion piece to Oliver Stone's Oscar-winner Platoon, showcasing star Tom Cruise in one of his most dramatic performances.".
