Review of Born into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids (2004) by Marilyn M — 09 Jun 2009
Quite the downer. I was expecting to see something inspirational, but no g. There are moments of hope within all the bleakness, but the ending montage dashes most of those. The kids themselves are awesome.
I don't know why, but Suchitra got to me the most, but each has a tragic story. They smile way too much for kids facing what they face. And their smiles are not due to any sort of naivety; they know how bad their situation is, and they know what their mothers do for a living.
Most of them have seemed to just accept their fate. Early on one of the kids says, "One has to accept life as being sad and painful. That is all." That about sums the movie up. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't watch it.
As another of the kids says towards the end, "though it's hard to face, we must look at it, because it is truth.".
