Review of Borderland (2007) by Jeffrey L — 17 May 2008
Starting this movie off, you're led to believe it's another Hostel rip-off. Thankfully that's not the case. This movie is based off a true story about a group of friends that go to Mexico for a vacation and get caught up with a drug cartel that kidnaps and murders people in a ritualistic sacrifice to a God that, they believe, will make them invisible to cops so they can go about their drug dealing business.
As I said, when the move starts off, the first 10 minutes will make you think it's another lame Hostel rip-off, however this ends up not being a torture-porn movie at all. Only one of the kids gets kidnapped, and the movie changes between him in captivity (Not being tortured at all, actually), and his friends going around the Mexican town, trying to find him and having no help from the cops at all.
However, that is also part of the downfall. Not a whole lot actually happens in this movie until towards the end, so it gets a bit boring. Thankfully though, the creepy atmosphere and situation, as well as the good acting, keeps this movie from ever going into the 'Bad' classification.
