Review of Boogie Nights (1997) by Steven M — 10 May 2011
A film about the porn industry and a man with an huge penis????? This is not the kind of film off the bat I would generally hang out to see, or even pick up the DVD cover. It's hard to really conceive at first, but the more you keep watching and thinking, the more you realize that this film is A - class, and that film actually has an extraordinary amount of depth. To say it's the best film of its genre is not an overstatement: Boogie nights includes a ripping script, full of beaten, tormented, bizarre, absurd and hilarious characters - all running from something and trying to find their place in the world, but whom have been scarred from their involvement in the industry of pornography. The film touches on many issues: ego, delusion, vanity, moral obligation, pride and abuse. The cast is astonishingly excellent - all star performances all round, with a beautiful balance between them. Jullienne Moore is superb, Burt Renolds of coarse is great; then there are a host of stand out co- roles: O -Reily, Don Cheadle - the list is endless. Every character has something to offer. every character is unique.
What's even more impressive is that Boogie Nights manages to create sympathy with all the characters, intense drama, hilarious moments - in a genre you would never ever dream to expect. It is refreshing to say the least.
Boogie Nights may not be well taken by some because of its exposing nature, but no one can deny this is a flawlessly made film of its kind.
