You can't tell the true story about Bonnie and Clyde without including a good amount of violence, and Arthur Penn understood this. Although, the freedom to use violence within a meaningful context has been abused, you can't blame in on Penn.
For 1967, it gets down to the nitty gritty of relationships and sex and crime that the audience of 1967 wasn't used to. A fascinating character study with good performances to go around.
