Review of Bon Cop Bad Cop (2006) by Allie T — 11 Aug 2007
A dead body is found laying across the Ontario Quebec border forcing a by the book english cop and a rebel french cop to work together to solve a string of murders that plauge the hockey world. Now normally I might have only rented this and really I only went to see it because my mom is in the credits (special thanks to...course they spelt her name wrong). But it was a lot better than I thought it would be. The banter between the cops is very good. While there's your normal good/bad cop relationship there's also the language and cultural issues. So you get them refusing to help each other in a bar fight until they ask in the correct language. The story line is also well done with a number of inside jokes for those who follow hockey. Then there's just pure Canadian jokes such as Rick Mercer telling a 'fruit' to get away from him (he's gay himself). Downsides are that since they switch between english and french in the film there are subtitles that at times go by rather quickly. Maybe the biggest hit against it is because it deal with local issues people in the States or out West might not get it, though people in Windsor seemed to like it. Europeans might also be able relate to the language jokes to their own countries. With that said if you're in the right area you should love this film.
Best Scene: After the house burns down.
Best Line: "He was a true Quebecer. His heart is in Quebec." "And he's got Ontario up the ass.".
Rating: See it.
