Review of Bon Cop Bad Cop (2006) by Julie M — 26 Aug 2008
A decent buddy cop action comedy that made me feel like the odd man out on an inside joke. The appeal for me was the interesting cultural differences between Quebec and Ontario which was entertaining and hopefully accurate.
Of course, that may be too much to ask for if I know how the film industry works when portraying different cultures! The action scenes were ok and the comedy scenes relied on the typical buddy cop police work ethic and cultural differences we can see in films like RUSH HOUR and TANGO AND CASH.
What was most unique in this film was the fact that they were Canadian natives with different french dialects which the film exploits with their constant witty wordplay and colloquialisms of the language.
Obviously, the film is aimed at a Canadian audience which will enjoy the movie more than an American movie goer would. Overall, I enjoyed the film's uniqueness and comedic action, but for hardcore action fans it may come as a disappointment.
They may have to settle for the Abbott and Costello routine and the Laurel and Hardy slapstick. Worth a watch on cable like I did!
