Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Gavin J — 05 Nov 2018
It's very difficult to capture the lifetime of a singer like Freddy Mercury, and a band like Queen, and this movie thankfully doesn't try to. It focuses on the song Bohemian Rhapsody, one of the greatest rock anthems ever produced, which is a very cool way to look in on Freddy and his band's career. The film takes a brief look at the early years of Freddy, with a few notes on his evolving sexuality, but where the movie shines is in the recording studios and practice halls, as the band works together to come up with hit after hit that propelled them to stardom. Perhaps the only disappointing part about this epic Queen tribute is that they never once just show you them performing the title song from beginning to end. A bit long, what? 6 minutes, perish the thought.
The Live Aid concert is worth the price of admission alone, as you get to experience it both as the crowd and up on stage as Freddy. Truly magic and it sent chills down my spine to watch Rami Malek's performance. Oscar nom better be in his cards, this was his career performance.
