Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by John J — 02 Nov 2018
Its true there are inconsistentcies but it is forgiven with good individual acting performances of the band members; mimicking many of their facial ticks and nuances. This gives Queen fans like me a feeling of familiarity and adds to the films credibility.
Of course two of the band members, John Deacon and Brian May are very introverted and this would make it a difficult script to write without weighing in with Freddie Mercury's larger than life personality to give it some life, although non Queen fans would only really be interested in Freddie.
I suppose the film could of been called 'Freddie Mercury's life, loves and music' with an in your face dose of homosexuality which was a bit uncomfortable for me, wishing the focus was more on the music, I suppose I learnt that the two were intrinsically linked and you couldn't have one without the other.
There is humour, passion, anger, bitterness and sadness interwoven through the story and I can't say there were any flat spots, keepung the viewers attention until the end. Cinematically, I found it easy on the eye with just the right distance on the filmed scenes.
If you like Queen you'll love the music and learning how some songs came into fruition. If you don't know their music you can expect to hear punching rock anthems through opera, blues, jazz and even disco.
I think this film is really for Queen fans more than anything although it is an incite into one of the greatest rock bands of the last century and the showmanship and genius of Freddie Mercury.
