Review of Body of Lies (2008) by Will H — 16 Jun 2010
Although this film is at times downright unintelligible, it remains a fun and engaging spy flick. Ridley Scott is one of my all-time favorite directors, and this film contains his signature style. Russell Crowe continues to be a strong collaborator of Scott's in his role as the cunning CIA vet Ed Hoffman.
Crowe looks much older than he ever has in this role, but it does not dampen the cleverness and sarcasm he delivers in this fine performance. Leonardo DiCaprio also stars as field op Roger Ferris, who relies on trust and manpower as opposed to Hoffman's style of trickery and deceit.
DiCaprio continues to impress in his string of recent roles, and this film helps contribute toward forgetting his role in Titanic. Mark Strong also has an impressive role as Hani Salaam, head of Jordanian intelligence who, like Ferris, opposes lying and deceit.
Most importantly, this film poses a deep question that not many films do: who exactly can you trust?
