Review of Body Heat (1981) by Rod A — 16 Aug 2010
I had never seen this film before. Taking its cues from Noir films of the 40s (Double Indemnity in particular), the attitudes advanced by the cinematography, dialogue, and script all contribute to a steamy situation with treachery simmering underneath.
There were moments of falseness in early bits of dialogue; attempts to imitate Bogie and Bacall seemed too forced. These missteps lasted only a moment and I was continually surprised and excited by the freshness of Turner, Hurt, and a strong cast of supporting characters.
Kasdan's smart script creates believable people in worrisome situations. At its best moments this film sweeps us away with the cross purposes and naked vulnerability of its well-conceived characters.
