Review of Bob Roberts (1992) by Jeff H — 07 Sep 2008
Before there was Dubya and Karl Rove there was Bob Roberts, Tim Robbins' superb, prescient mockumentary about a Republican Senate candidate who presents as a right-wing Bob Dylan - he's an anti-liberal folk singer! - but is in fact a modern-day Machiavelli. Gore Vidal, long-time critic and exposer of the true nature of American politics and power (did you know that the National Security Council, comprised of the Defense Department, the CIA, and arms manufacturers, has been controlling the United States since 1950?), is perfectly cast as Roberts' Democratic opponent in this smart and chilling satire.
"I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility to every form of tyranny over the mind of man." - Thomas Jefferson.
