Review of Bob le Flambeur (1956) by Arin D — 31 Aug 2008
Another great addition to the noir genre from Melville (a hint of great things to come with flicks like 'Le Samourai'). This one is pitch-perfect as well, even if the acting from some of the cast is amateurish (they were mostly amateurs after all - Melville picked Corey from the street because she 'looked the part').
The ending: cynical, tragic, and darkly humorous, fits the rest of the film. Apparently this film presages techniques used in the Nouvelle Vague (which was just about beginning). If so, I didn't see it nor is that as important as it is made out to be in the context of this film.
