Review of Blues Brothers 2000 (1998) by Philip S — 15 Apr 2008
Blues Brothers 2000 is less a sequel than an attempt to remake the original Blues Brothers, sans John Belushi. In his place, director John Landis put John Goodman as "Mighty Mack", the band's new frontman.
Along the way, Elwood and Mack encounter nearly every one of the characters from the original Blues Brothers film, and some new ones, such as Daryl Hannah as the leader of a secret White Supremacist organization, and Erica Badhu as the voodoo queen that the band ultimately plays for in the big "battle of the bands" in Lousiana.
The movie picks up where the last one left off. This time, Elwood is getting out of jail. There is even a small tribute to Belushi in the opening scne whenthe warden comes down and tells Elwood abotu Jake's passing. So for all the remake elements, that tribute, as small as it is, speaks volumes to long time fans of the Blues Brothers. It showed that they had not forgotten John Belushi.
Blues Brothers 2000 could be argued to be a remake, and a sequel all in one. Fans who saw the original will see mostly the same in this movie. But, with all of the musical numbers, this second installment of America's favorite Musical Men in Black is a fun ride from start to finish.
