Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Alexander Z — 05 Dec 2010
This movie is too absurd to take seriously. The acting is either wooden or super theatrical. There's absolutely no grounding in reality, yet clearly the themes are meant to satirize the facade of society, so some might say that is Lynch's intention. So really, I don't care for Lynch's style of directing. His movies switch between campy, surreal and emotional without any sense of transition, and it doesn't work for me. Even in The Elephant Man, he couldn't resist injecting some of that trademark style towards the end. His experimentation is boring to me.
I will say that Dennis Hopper made me laugh a lot, especially with his beer quip.
