Actually one of Lynch's more conventional works, but still uncompromising. Blue Velvet is a film with an appeal which is almost impossible to explain, it's unpleasant, yet beautiful and very harsh, yet romantic.
The film explores a favourite theme of Lynch's; the seedy underworld of middle class suburban paradise, in this case characterised by prostitution, drug trafficking, kidnapping and murder. The entire cast is strong and put in superb performances, but the show is stolen by Dennis Hopper as terrifying gangster Frank Booth, one of the most loathsome characters ever put to celluloid.
A cult classic, and an inspiration to many dark, daring films that would come after it, this is a must see.
