Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Sabrina I — 12 Jul 2011
BLUE VELVET is not nearly as mind bending as some of Lynch's other films as the story is more easy to follow - but it is still equally bizarre and stylish. The best thing about his work is that you never know where the film is going or where it is going to end up.
Most of the time you feel like you are in some nightmarish dream, surreal and other-worldly. Perhaps thats why his films are so atmospheric. In BLUE VELVET we are witness to mysterious, sordid cast of character's doing bizarre, insane things.
No one seems normal. Not even the seemingly clean-cut Jeff (played by Kyle MacLachlan). He is quiet and well mannered. But even he has a dark side that comes out in unexpected ways which leave him shocked.
The film owes quite a bit to noir - it's got the mystery elements, the shady characters and the seedy underbelly of suburban America. I would also say BLUE VELVET is like the Oscar-winning AMERICAN BEAUTY.
Which also tried to expose the dark side of a seemingly normal neighbhorhood But BLUE VELVET takes things furthur to the more perverse and the twisted. It gets under your skin. It doesn't shy away from uncomfortable sides of human nature.
It takes you there whether you want to go or not.
