Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Tony's F — 16 Nov 2010
I enjoyed the film Mulholland drive from David Lynch, and thats because that film was full of substance, great suspense, believable Acting and the story continued to thicken throughout the film and thats what kept Me interested the whole time. Blue Velvet on the other hand didnt do any of those things that I just mentioned. This Film lacked substance, and a story that sounded like it could of been an interesting Murder Mystery case, tho it just turned out to be a disturbing ride to hell.
Blue Velvet stars Kyle MacLachlan, and His character is called (Jeffrey Beaumont). One day (Jeffrey) finds a human ear in a near by field, so he than takes it to the Police to see if it could be from a dead Person or someone missing. From this point on in the Movie we follow (Jeffrey) and his Gf (Sandy) who both want to try and figure out where this ear came from, and if there could be a Killer loose in their neigbourhood. (Sandy's) father is actually a Police Detective, and she happend to hear Her Dad talking to someone about The Ear that (Jeffrey) had found, and her Father also mentioned a ladies name that could be a suspect, and her name is (Dorothy).
(Sandy) tells (Jeffrey) what she heard her Father say, so than they both have an idea to break into (Dorothy's) house to investigate. Im not to sure why Jeffrey and Sandy want to do this, tho there is a quote that Jeffrey says throughout the film that could be the reason why they want to figure the case out for themselves. Who really cares tho?, I dont!
The suspect that im talking about is called (Dorothy Vallens), and her character is a "Beautiful and troubled" Lounge Singer, and the song she always sings and that everybody likes is called (Blue Velvet). The next character that is brought to the Film just out of the blue is a sick, Sad and twisted Man which is played by Dennis Hopper. Hopper's charcter is (Frank Booth) and we find out that he has kidnapped (Dorothys) husband and Child. Im not to sure why he has kidnapped them, maybe I just missed the answer to that while we are watching (Frank) pritty much rape (Dorothy) in very disturbing ways, and before he does rape her he actually needs to breath heavley into a oxygen mask to get him pumped up, and than he would stick a piece of "Blue Velvet" in his mouth before he does his disgusting deeds. To tell You the truth, I actually hated this film from this point on, these arent the sort of things I want to be watching in a film. And now I have already forgot about the whole Mystery story that I thought it was going to be about.
Normally in a situation like this I would just turn the Film off, tho whats the point if im already an Hour though it. I might aswell watch the rest of the film to see why everyone calls this a Masterpiece, Shouldnt I?, well thats what I did.
As the Story goes on the less I cared about the relationship between (Jeffrey) and (Sandy), well I didnt care in the first place tho im sure there was a relationship haha. Its like (Sandy) just vanished into thin air, just like David Lynch's Directing.
Now we see that(Jeffrey) has started to have a sexual relationship with (Dorothy), and dont ask Me how this happend it just simply did. I honestly didnt care about anything that I was watching, The Director or Jeffrey couldnt make his mind up what he was going to do. The film came to the point where I would just laugh in agony at how Bad this film was getting, as the story kept getting more dull and boring and it felt like the whole Mystery actually wasnt a Mystery.
(Jeffrey) and the singer (Dorothy)somehow begin to fall in love, and we see a few explict Sex scenes which involved alot of "Hit Me,Hit Me harder", and thats exactly what happend and we even were watching (Jeffrey) hit her. How are these Sex scenes known to be so original and considered as "Violent/Sex Scene Masterpieces" is just another thing that I laugh at.
Im coming to the end of my review now, and theres not much to say, just like theres not much to say about the ending of the film. There was an ending where the Mystery story was answered and solved I guess, and we find out who has the missing Ear!.
Wow thats amazing, I just sat through a movie about a Missing Ear, A crazy lunatic kidnapper,a Guy who falls in love with with the Suspect and to top that off alot of disturbing and I would say ridiculous Sex scenes. I know im hating on this Film, tho I can recommend it to People that like David Lynch's films as he does bring us different sort of Movies, I just hope there is no more dull and ludacris films out there like this one tho.
