Review of Blue Valentine (2010) by Steven C — 06 Apr 2012
"Blue Valentine" is a contemporary John Cassavetes film. From the cinema verite camera work to the raw, vulnerable performances to the unflinchingly honest depiction of the human condition. What's even better is that director/co-writer Derek Cianfrance knows where his inspirations are coming from and he is able to manipulate these aspects into something that stands on it's own.
From the effective intercutting of time frames, the thematic lines, and the incredible set design he has a masterful control over what we see. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams deliver two of the most emotionally honest performances I have seen.
The pair of them literally become this couple in a way actors only dream. I know that sounds silly, but once you see the film, you will understand. "Blue Valentine" is the type of film that comes along so rarely.
It gives us a glimpse of how we act, the good the bad, the reasonable, the nonsensical. This is an extraordinary film not for the simple minded. I had an extremely powerful experience, "Blue Valentine" will stay with you long, long after it's over.
